October 7, 2000 – January 7, 2001

Tacoma Art Museum’s Japanese woodblock print collection consists of about 350 prints and provides a general survey of the Japanese woodblock print history dating from the 1600s to mid-1800s. This collection is the second largest in the Northwest and was donated to the museum between 1964 and 1984. In Style featured a selection of fifty Japanese woodblock prints dating from the 18th and 19th centuries and were grouped into themes: Actors and Popular Theater, Courtesans and the Licensed Quarter, Heroes of History and Legend, Subjects from Literature, and Views of Nature and Famous Sites. The collection was largely the gift of a single collector, Mrs. Constance R. Lyon. Curated by Bill Rathbun.
