Pressed: The Silkscreen

June 28 – September 8, 2002

Pressed: The Silkscreen explored the technique and history of this very simple printmaking process, where ink is applied to a screen, blocked in some areas and forced through the screen in others, leaving a characteristically bold, solid mark without shadows or highlights. The materials for silkscreening are easy to access and assemble; complicated tools and heavy presses are not needed, enhancing the popularity of this method by allowing artists to work in a small studio setting. This exhibition includes works by Robert Indiana, Roger Shimomura, and Terry Winters, as well as samples of a work in progress, and examples of screens and tools. It is the third in a series of four exhibitions drawn from Tacoma Art Museum’s distinguished print collection, following Pressed: The Woodcutand Pressed: The Lithograph.
