The BLM Mural Project Tacoma-a collaboration between Tacoma Art Museum, The City of Tacoma, and artist Dionne Bonner-is a months-long effort to recognize the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement and the local Black community. Public surveys and focus groups ensured the community’s input was included in the mural design. Artists creating a mural on Tacoma’s Tollefson Plaza steps invited the public to add their handprints in paint, continuing the community involvement aspect of the Black Lives Matter project.
The mural’s purpose is to celebrate African Americans’ achievements and contributions throughout history. The community handprints decorate a quilt within the mural design, communicating that we’re all part of the fabric working toward racial equality together. “Using creativity to bring people together and make a positive impact is one of the most fulfilling things I can do as an artist,” Bonner said.
