What color has been asking for your attention a lot lately? What three values and commitments define you? What makes you feel like you belong? These are some of the questions that “The Current: Saying the Quiet Parts Out Loud” explores, inviting everyone to be more supportive of the landscape of Black artists in the Tacoma area. The exhibition celebrates the themes and values of The Current, An Artist Award. The Current, An Artist Award is annually awarded to a Black artist working and living in the region.
In its inaugural year, The Current artist awardee is Darrell McKinney, an innovative storyteller who pushes boundaries as he works with materials like concrete across sculpture and design. His window installation, One Way Mirror, featured in the gallery, cannot be expressed through words only. This installation reminds us that art can be much more than something you see. It is felt, experienced and awakens us to reflect on significant themes.
“It is an exploration of the possible, of care and intimacy. An exploration of our values physically: what does warmth, connection, intimacy, and inspiration look like, as if these values are palpable,” said the Exhibition Curator and Artist Award Manager, Victoria Miles. She reinforces that the show design and artwork combine to create an immersive experience that embodies the values of the project and offers a thoughtful connection to The Current and Black artists.
This immersive exhibition celebrates Black art and culture like no other. The show will be on display until October 15, 2023. Check out a preview in the video below.
