Call to Artists: Northwest Art Now @ TAM 2016

Northwest Art Now @ TAM 2016  (previously titled the Northwest Biennial) seeks to illuminate how Northwest artists are actively responding to forces shaping our regional identity during this current wave of explosive growth and rapid rebound from the Great Recession. The core themes will focus on identity, social justice, and environmental action.

The exhibition will be co-curated by Rock Hushka, Tacoma Art Museum’s Chief Curator, and Juan Roselione-Valadez, Director of the Rubell Family Collection, Contemporary Arts Foundation. It runs  May 14 – August 21, 2016.

Artists working across the spectrum of visual media, including traditional forms such as painting and sculpture, craft-based work, conceptual, performance, installation, and digital projects, are encouraged to apply.

Deadline

11:59 PM (P.S.T.) MONDAY JANUARY 4, 2016;  All Application materials must be received by this deadline. Only online applications will be considered. Applications sent by mail, submitted in person, or those arriving late or incomplete, will not be considered.

Eligibility

  • Northwest Art Now @ TAM 2016is open to artists and artist teams residing in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, and British Columbia, Canada.
  • Artists should be currently active, demonstrating an ongoing pattern of producing and presenting work.
  • All applicants must be 18 years of age or older at the time of application.

All applicants must submit the following materials

  • Current contact information
  • Résumé:  Two-page (maximum) résumé. For team applications, please combine résumés for all team members into one document, two pages (maximum) per team member (e.g., a team of three members would submit one resume document, with up to two pages per team member, totaling no more than six pages)
  • Artist Statement:  1000 words (or less) that describes your art practice.
  • Only Portable Document Format (.pdf) and Word (.docx or .doc) documents will be accepted.

WORK SAMPLES AND WORK SAMPLE INFORMATION

  • In alignment with the curatorial mission ofNorthwest Art Now @ TAM 2016, work  samples should represent work created after January 2012.
  • Applicants must submit a minimum of 5 work samples, with a maximum of 10 permitted.
  • If applying as a team, the team may submit no more than 10 work samples total.
  • For applicants submitting digital images and webhosted video work, the total maximum of work samples is also 10.
  • File specifications for digital images:
    • Work samples should be in JPG format.
    • Images must be 1920 pixels on the longest side and at least 72 dpi.
    • Files should use compression settings resulting in the best image quality under 2MB in size.
  • Please note: If selected to participate in Northwest Art Now @ TAM 2016, artists will be asked to provide high-resolution, professional photography of work for the exhibition’s companion publication.
  • Submissions for digital art (video or other related projects) and performance work should be submitted in the form of links to the video web host. (e.g.,https://vimeo.com/141234632)

Work Sample Information

List the sample number, title of the artwork, date of completion, medium, and dimensions –  e.g., 1)  Untitled, 2015, Oil on canvas, 24 í— 48 inches.

For digital art (video or other related projects) and performance work:

List the sample number, title of the artwork, date of completion, medium, and duration –  e.g., 1)  Untitled, 2015,  Single-channel video, 2:39 minutes).


ARTIST SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants must fulfill the online application requirements by the application deadline. Co-curators Rock Hushka and Juan  Roselione-Valadez will review all applications and select artists for further consideration.  The curators will  conduct studio visits with each of these artists to determine the final selection of artists who will be included in the  Northwest Art Now @ TAM 2016  exhibition.

*Studio visits will be scheduled JANUARY 16-18 2016.

*Studio visit schedule and format may vary, where necessary, in response to studio location and time constraints.  

Selection Criteria

Artists or artist teams will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Quality and strength of past work as demonstrated in the submitted application materials
  • Adherence to the themes set forth in the curatorial statement
