Splash 360

April 1, 2019 - April 31, 2019

Just in time for Spring Break, Tacoma Art Museum (TAM) presents Splash 360, a new interactive aquatic installation/performance art piece featuring an array of live mermaids and colorful tropical fish which will open on Monday, April 1. Following the ramped walkway, visitors can wind their way around the new art work which has converted the Museum’s central courtyard, home of Untitled by Richard Rhodes, into a 12,000 gallon open-air, fresh water aqua-environment.

“From the giant octopus under the Narrows Bridge to the long history of being a port city, it was a natural fit to bring the mermaid myth to life at TAM. By activating the space with this hydro-performative environment, we not only pay homage to our city’s past, but help inspire the imaginations of our visitors,” notes David F. Poseidon, TAM Executive Director and Chief AquaFauna Officer. “Mermaids have been a popular subject in art and literature throughout the centuries and this installation at TAM adds to the oeuvre of this iconic symbol of feminine power and intrigue.”

Following in the wake of the successes of the pop-up Mermaid Museum last March in Los Angeles and the new Pacific Seas Aquarium at Point Defiance, TAM’s Splash 360 will be on view through April 31, 2019.
