IN THE SPIRIT ARTS MARKET & NORTHWEST NATIVE FESTIVAL
Indigenous Youth Fashion Show at Tacoma Art Museum
Saturday, August 10, 2024
Contact: Education@TacomaArtMuseum.org
The Tacoma Art Museum in partnership with the Washington State History Musuem and fashion designer Mary Kelsay, founder of MEKA, are in search of Indigenous youth (ages 16-19 years old) who have a passion for clothing design to create a new piece for TAM’s annual In the Spirit fashion show, with the theme Protectors.
Five youth designers will be selected and each will be awarded $100 towards supplies to create a new piece, and $100 stipend to keep, for their participation. Each youth will show their finished design in the In the Spirit fashion show on Saturday August 10 at the Tacoma Art Museum!
Leading up to the show youth will have one virtual and one in-person mentorship sessions with designer Mary Kelsay: one meeting will be to go over expectations and theme, and one in person meeting at TAM to finalize designs before the fashion show. These meetings are mandatory, and we ask youth to be committed to participating.
