The Current // “what if” Opening Party

We were thrilled to have the community come out to our opening of the exhibition what if.

what if, a multivocal exhibition, is an exploration of the expansiveness of interiority using curiosity as a way finder, illustrating how Black artists remain curious, imaginative, and authentic to self, despite societal perceptions and limitations.

The exhibition features works from artists Kristina Batiste, Le’Ecia Farmer, and Cristina Martinez, including a variety of mediums ranging from ceramics and textiles to paintings and prints. Also included in the exhibition is a sound design inspired by the exhibition’s theme and selected works, produced by Christopher Hill.

The exhibition is a thematic expression that is parallel to and reflective of The Current, An Artist Award—an ongoing, annual, and unrestricted award providing financial and institutional support to a Black artist living and working in the Tacoma area .

The exhibition, curated by Victoria Miles, incorporates space for communing and gathering, inviting dialogue and reflection. Let’s come together to support Black visual narratives that shape and define the artistic currents of Tacoma.
